Rising Demand for Better Urban Planning to Fuel GIS Market Demand!

The global geographic information system (GIS) is projected to reach a valuation of USD 11.2 billion by 2025, according to a report published by Grand View Research, Inc. Geographic information systems are meant to capture, store, and display data related to topographical features of surrounding areas. The conversion from raster to vector images has application in location-based services and popularized by known brands such as Uber and Google Maps.

Digital businesses are increasingly using GIS maps to further their growth strategy. Civil engineers are utilizing GIS for better urban planning and smart use of available resources. Various initiative programs, such as the Smart Cities Mission, are expected to digitize roads and highways, which make it easier for tourists or locals to travel around the city. These maps can be developed by checking the pathways preferred by the citizens and integrate the accumulated data in order to create smarter maps. The National Dairy Development Board, an organization encouraging milk producers in rural regions, used GIS to collect data on the supply chain and identify new centers to improve milk collection.

Increasing urbanization across the globe has created the need for intelligent transportation systems to traverse complex roadways. For instance, ESRI Holdings, a U.K.-based company, uses GIS to provide city planners with adequate information regarding forest areas or schools to reduce investment costs in infrastructure planning. Disaster management agencies and traffic management solution providers can use these maps to improve planning and adjust traffic flow through urban roads.

The global GIS market demand is expected to experience a significant growth during the forecast period (from 2018 to 2025) owing to its adoption in infrastructure development. Future planning of smart cities coupled with rise of location-based services is likely to drive the market growth over the next few years. In addition, integration of technologies such as LiDAR and Cloud with GIS software are also estimated to have a positive impact on the global market expansion in the forthcoming years. Some of the companies operating in the global GIS market are ESRI Holdings Limited; Pitney Bowes Inc.; Autodesk Inc.; and Hexagon AB.
