Molecular Weight Markers
Molecular weight (MW) markers are markers used in determining
the size of the molecule during electrophoresis. The size allows scientists to
estimate the size of other DNA fragments within the molecule. They are also
known as DNA, RNA, and protein ladders.
RNA, DNA, and protein markers are MW markers commercially
available for testing purposes. Technological innovations such as polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) allow these markers
to be cloned for further research in molecular biology. They are used in
detecting viral strains in plants, animals, and humans.

Latest Developments
Thermo Fisher Scientific, one of the leaders in the molecular
biology industry, offers a wide variety of ladders for research purposes. Ladders
can be used to test base pair lengths ranging from 10 bp (base pairs) to 12 kb
(kilo base pairs). These can be stained
with ethidium bromide and other DNA stains.
Developments of these markers have culminated in the
formation of portable kits to detect and identify diseases. Molecular Detection
Inc. (MDI), a US company, launched Detect-Ready tests to detect sepsis and gastrointestinal
infections. Recently, it was used to identify Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
(CCHF) in Bulgaria. The test allowed the doctors to provide the necessary
vaccines and reduce the death rate caused by CCHF.
Market Overview
The worldwide DNA ladder market size is expected to exceed
USD 1 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research, Inc. It was valued at
USD 355.2 million in 2016. The market demand is driven by the use of these
markers in proteomic and biologic applications. It is encouraged by the
increasing focus on molecular biology by major corporations.
Major products in the market are protein, DNA, and RNA
markers. DNA markers are anticipated a high CAGR over the forecast period (2014
- 2025) due to increased R&D activity in genomics. Pharmaceutical &
biotechnology companies are predicted to be the biggest market end-user by the
end of the forecast period. Asia Pacific is estimated to exhibit high CAGR
during the forthcoming years due to interest of contract research organizations
in developing novel drugs. Key players include Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc.;
Qiagen; New England Biolabs; and Promega Corporation.
